Om åska tycker vi inte! Inte heller blixtnedslag i båten. För att skydda båten vid en direktträff så har vi kopparkablar som vi fäster med kardborrband på stagen och sedan släpps kabeln i vattnet. En kabel för varje stag. Kardorrebandet är för att få så stor anläggningsyta som möjligt.

Har vi då tur, för det måste man nog ha när det gäller åska, så hoppar blixten från oss och ner i vattnet och båten klarar sig. Att vi får dra om varenda elledning på båten och byta all elektronik är en annan sak. Det kan bli resultatet utan en direktträff också.

Men nu senast när vi använde våra kablar såg vi att de var i ett erbarmligt skick. Hälften försvann i havet och de kvarvarande klarar inte en användning till. Kopparen tycker helt enkelt inte om saltvatten

Så raskt utökades vinterns att-göra-lista med en ny punkt: Nya åskledare. Eller egentligen Blixtledare.

We have a saying onboard; ”we don’t do storms and we don’t do ice or thunderstorms.”

Well snow and ice and winter are easy to stay away from. Even Storms can be avoided but thunderstorms just appear out of nothing. Sometimes they warn about them but very often it is just in your neighbourghhood.

You all know that the lightning goes for the highest thing and being alone out on the sea with a 70 foot/22 m high mast is like asking for getting hit. And with all disaster that follows. No, we don’t do thunderstorms.

But if you are out there, no where to take shelter then you have to protect your self and one thing is to fool the lightning to go into the sea. That will say if we get a direct hit. We do that by connecting every stay to the water with a copper cable. It is attached to the stay with velcro to get as big as possible connection area and then the cable goes over the side into the water.

We haven’t used them that many times, thank God, but now they have given in. The copper didn’t like the sea water. So the last time we used them, a couple of weeks ago, we lost more than half of them and the rest is in a terrible condition. So one of the winter projects are to make new ones. 

But our cables doesn’t protect us from the electrostatic field from the lightning. That requires a Faraday Cage.
