Var idag på ett föredrag av besättningn på,Skylark II, Chris och Desiree där de berättade om deras 4 månaders långa segling från Thailand till Medelhavet, via Röda Havet 2011.

En resa som var psykiskt påfrestande i princip hela tiden. Hur de gick från att segla i en eskader med 30 båtar till två som såsmåningom utökads till nio. En resa där de fick besked om att två av deras kompis våtar blev tagna av piraterna, hur de två gånger tvingades in i Indiska hamnar utan att ha visum. Hur de tvingades gå nästan ända upp till Pakistan innan de vågade korsa Indiska oceanen till Oman. Hur de når de under nätterna gick längs Omans kust mot Röda Havet och gång på gång fastnade i fiskenät. Ett föredrag där man satt och höll andan i mer eller mindra två timmar, trots att man visste att de klarade av passagen.

Dumdristigt? Båda ja och nej. Alternativen att sätta segelbåten på ett transport fartyg för 800 USD/fot eller att fördröja ”hemkomsten” till Medelhavet och Europa med 1,5-2 år och segla runt Cape of Good Hope, Sydafrika fanns inte då de hade ont om pengar och krassliga gamla föräldrar som behövde besök. De vägde alla alternativ noggrant och stödde sig på statistik över piratangrepp under 2010 som var lägre än under 2009. Men statistik är statistik och 2011 blev ett av de värsta åren avseende piratattacker med en segelbåtsbesättning om 4 personer mördade och en dansk familj på en segelbåt tillfånga tagna. 

Av de 30 som lämnade Thailand för att segla i konvoj till Medelhavet via Röda Havet var det nio båtar som genomförde bedriften.

Where today at a talk by the crew on Skylark II, Chris and Desiree where they talked about their 4-month-long sailing from Thailand to the Mediterranean via the Red Sea in 2011.

A trip that was psychologically stressful in principle all the time. How they went from sailing in a flotilla of 30 boats to two Eventually extended to nine. A trip where they were told that two of their friends where was captured by the pirates, how they twice forced into Indian ports without a visa. How they had to go almost all the way to Pakistan before they dared to cross the Indian Ocean to Oman. How they during night went along Oman’s coastline on the Red Sea and repeatedly got caught in fishing nets. A lecture where you sat and held your breath in more or less two hours, even though you knew that they managed the passage.

Foolishly? Both yes and no. The options to set the boat on a transport ship for 800 USD / feet or delay the ”return” to the Mediterranean and Europe, with 1.5-2 years sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa did not exist when they were short of money and ailing old parents who needed care. They weighed all the options carefully and relied on the statistics of pirate attacks in 2010, which was lower than in 2009. But statistics are statistics, and 2011 was one of the worst years regarding pirate attacks with a sailing crew of four people killed and a Danish family on a sailboat captured captured.

Of the 30 who left Thailand to sail in convoy to the Mediterranean via the Red Sea there were only nine boats which carried out the feat.
